Iconic Streets of Somerset West
When you live in a town, there are a handful of street names that always pop up in conversation. “I was driving up Lourensford Road and saw Café 1865 opened up where Chatters used to be,” or “If you’re ever in a rush, whatever you do, do not turn right at the top of Caledon Street.”
If you’re new in town – or just trying to get your bearings – here are six streets that define daily life in Somerset West.
Main Road
The heartbeat of Somerset West. Main Road is where you find all the essentials: Mediclinic Vergelegen, banks, the Engen petrol station, Town Hall, and the main shopping hubs like Somerset Square, Circle Centre, Alexandra Place, and the KwikSpar at Lion’s Square. It’s busy, bustling, and full of the rhythms of village life.
Caledon Street
Need an escape from the traffic and speed bumps on Main Road? Caledon Street is your friend. With ample parking within walking distance of the centre, it’s home to great coffee spots like Sage & Thyme, Spoon Bakery, and Bootleggers. It’s also where you’ll find the Somerset West Village Garden, Tyson Properties, and Shelley Taylor Designs.
Bright Street
Art, creativity, and sophistication live here. The Imibala Trust NPO owns several properties, including their café and the Bright Street Collective. Pop by Chelsea Village Shopping, Schoon Café, Plato Coffee, or Sapphire Sushi for a true taste of local flair. This street has a way of making every visit feel like an experience.
Lourensford Road
Cross Main Road at the top of Bright Street, and you’re on Lourensford Road. At first, it’s a business and office hub, but soon it opens into a mix of homes and hidden gems. Along the way: HH Public Hospital, Somerset House Preparatory School, The Playhouse, a Shell garage with a surprisingly legendary bakery, Radloff Park, and eventually, a gateway to our iconic wine estates: Vergelegen, Lourensford, and Morgenster.
Parel Vallei Road
A suburban favourite, Parel Vallei Road is instantly recognisable by the iconic blue-gummed gateway to Parel Vallei High School. It’s also the gateway to a scenic drive through Spanish Farm, and if you’re into hill training, this is your spot.
Irene Avenue
Branching off from Lourensford Road by the HH Hospital, Irene Avenue is a well-known street for many reasons. Cyclists might grumble at the steep incline, while others love the iconic bike track at the bottom of the hill. Teenagers flock to Reservoir Park for sunset views, and for many Somerset Westers, it’s a scenic route straight into Stellenbosch. (And true locals know it has three syllables when you say it right!)
Whether you’re driving, walking, cycling, or just exploring, these streets tell the story of Somerset West: a village of history, beauty, and everyday discoveries. Next time someone mentions “Bright Street” or “Irene,” you’ll know exactly where the conversation is heading.
