Celebrating 23 Years of Belonging

In the heart of Somerset West, there’s a place where mornings begin with friendly greetings, shared laughter, gentle movement, and a sense of purpose. For the past 23 years, the HSFA Garden Village Service Centre has quietly been doing what it does best: creating connection, care and community for older residents in our town.

What started as something beautifully simple – a few seniors gathering in the lounge of one of their members – has grown into a vibrant service centre now operating from the Somerset West Town Hall. Today, the Centre supports people over the age of 60 from areas including Laurentia Park, Helderzicht, Garden Village and beyond. Its oldest member is a proud 93-year-old, a living reminder that ageing can still be rich, active and deeply meaningful.

At its core, the Service Centre exists to help older persons live independently for as long as possible, while staying socially connected and engaged. Days at the Centre are filled with gentle exercise, arts and crafts, spiritual enrichment and shared meals – small moments that add up to something powerful: belonging. Transport to and from the Centre ensures that no one is excluded, and that each gathering feels accessible and welcoming.

Wellbeing here is about whole-person care. Monthly clinic visits from the Vonke Wellness Clinic help members keep track of important health indicators like blood pressure and blood sugar levels, while health talks encourage informed, healthy lifestyle choices. HSFA’s occupational therapist offers practical guidance on mobility and independence, helping members adapt to changing bodies with dignity and confidence.

There’s also space for learning and conversation. Social workers host sessions on topics that matter deeply, such as the rights of older persons, elder abuse prevention, budgeting and financial literacy. For those navigating personal challenges, counselling support is available — a reminder that emotional wellbeing is just as important as physical health.

Food plays a special role at the Centre too. The food programme ensures members receive nutritious meals, but just as importantly, it creates space for connection around the table. These shared meals often become the highlight of the day – a chance to swap stories, check in on one another, and feel seen.

None of this happens in isolation. The Garden Village Service Centre is sustained by the wider Somerset West community – individuals, organisations and supporters who believe that our elders deserve to be valued, supported and celebrated. HSFA extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who plays a role in making this possible.

After 23 years, the Centre remains a powerful example of what community care looks like when it’s rooted in respect, warmth and human connection. It’s not just a service – it’s a place where people belong.
