The Somerset West Sports Edit

Somerset West is a place where, if you like to stay active and social, you’ll FIT right in (pun intended). Sport here isn’t just something you do – it’s part of how people connect, unwind and enjoy life.

No matter your pace or preference, there’s a group of locals just as keen to get moving as you are. In celebration of World Health Day this month, we’re taking a look at some of the sports communities around town that are ready to welcome you in.

Running & Walking

If running or walking is your thing, you’re in good company.

Helderberg Harriers (est. 1977) is a long-standing local favourite, built on the simple idea that anyone who wants to run is welcome. With Tuesday time trials, Saturday pack runs, and regular social runs, it’s as inclusive as it gets.

Somerset West Run Crew, the new kid on the block (founded in 2024), has quickly built a following with its social, high-energy vibe. With weekly runs from spots like Reservoir Road, Bootlegger and Paardevlei, it’s as much about community as it is about fitness.

Run/Walk For Life Somerset West offers a more structured, health-focused approach, with scientifically backed programmes designed to help you reach your goals – whether that’s fitness, weight management, or simply getting started.

Team sports

Team sports are alive and well in Somerset West, with clubs that have deep roots in the community.

De Beers AFC (est. 1902) has been developing local football talent for over a century. From juniors to seniors, it’s a club built on community, volunteerism and a real love for the game.

Helderberg Rugby Klub, formed in 1997, brings together players from across the Helderberg Basin. Based at Charles Morkel Stadium, it’s a hub for competitive rugby and community spirit.

Courts & Clubs

For those who enjoy racquet sports or something a little different, there’s plenty to choose from.

Somerset West Tennis Club (est. 1897) is one of the oldest in the Boland, offering social tennis on Wednesdays and Saturdays in a welcoming, all-ages environment.

Radloff Park Squash Club is a small, friendly club set against the mountains – perfect for both social and competitive players.

Somerset West Croquet Club (est. 1970) offers a slower, more social pace, with regular club sessions and a strong sense of camaraderie (often ending with a glass of wine).

Somerset West Bowls Club is another long-standing favourite, with regular social “tabs-in” days throughout the week.

PadelX offers a premium indoor experience with coaching, social games and a lively community atmosphere – all under one roof.

Padel at Lourensford is something special – set among vineyards and mountain views, it’s as much about the setting as the sport. A great option for a full day out.

Workout Studios

If group classes or guided training are more your style, there’s no shortage of options.

The Fit Squad (Alexandra Place on Main Road) offers group and one-on-one sessions in Bounce, Burn and Pilates, with a strong community feel.

KORR Studio (Twin Oaks, Main Road) focuses on Pilates and mindful movement, helping you build strength and connection to your body.

Move with Suz (Lourensford Estate) offers small, intimate classes – from HIIT to strength and cycling – designed to support both physical and mental wellbeing.

Springs Pilates(Chelsea Village on Bright Street) offers Reformer Pilates classes for all levels, focused on strength, control and balance.

F45 Somerset West (Melcksloot Village by the Mall) brings high-energy, team-based functional training – quick, effective workouts in a motivating group environment.

A Town That Moves Together

What stands out most isn’t just the variety – it’s the people and the history. Whether you’re chasing a personal best, trying something new, or just looking for a reason to get out and meet people, Somerset West has a way of making it easy to get involved.

So if you’ve been thinking about joining something – this is your sign!
