Somerset West Central On the Rise
There’s a certain energy building in Somerset West Central right now. Main Road has always been the heartbeat of our village, but lately it feels like that heartbeat is picking up pace. New businesses are opening, familiar spaces are being refreshed, and long-term developments are quietly reshaping how we move through the centre of town.
New life in familiar places
At the Twin Oaks Centre, things are already shifting in interesting ways. Fynbos Sauna & Plunge has recently opened its doors, and this isn’t just your average wellness stop.
Fynbos is introducing a more integrated approach to recovery and wellbeing, combining sauna, cold plunges, red light therapy, float therapy and hyperbaric oxygen into one coordinated experience. Instead of isolated treatments, visitors move through multiple therapies in a single session – creating what founder Vaughan van Oudtshoorn describes as “a more efficient physiological response.”
They’ve also partnered with Mobi IV and Élan Beauty, allowing clients to build broader wellness and recovery experiences right here in Somerset West. In other words: your post-work recovery routine just got a serious upgrade.
At Alexandra Place, there’s been a steady wave of new activity:
A new car wash, Somerset Shine, is now up and running
Noa Nails is operating under new management with fresh energy
Alchemy Hair is preparing to relocate from Lion’s Square, with a mid-May opening planned
Wildebosch Meats, a new boutique venison, biltong and droëwors outlet, is set to open next to Bäckerei, adding something distinctly local to the mix
These may feel like small changes individually, but together they point to something bigger – a town that is evolving, diversifying, and leaning into both convenience and experience.
big moves ahead
One of the most anticipated long-term developments remains the Twin Oaks redevelopment, which is on track for construction to begin in 2027.
Plans include opening the site through to Caledon Street, creating a landscaped piazza-style courtyard and a retail destination focused on lifestyle, health, beauty and boutique retail. It’s a vision that leans into walkability, gathering spaces, and a more connected CBD experience.

a new village walkway
This all sits alongside the ongoing work of the Somerset West CID and the Village Collective, including the proposed Village Walkway Phase 1, which aims to improve pedestrian connectivity and strengthen the flow between key nodes in the CBD with public art, greening and pause points, allowing the public moments of reflection and enjoyment.

further down main road…
A little further along Main Road, there’s also growing anticipation around the future of Michael’s Arcade – with an exciting retail development underway. This is definitely one to watch as the CBD continues to evolve.
There’s a growing sense that Somerset West Central is evolving into something more connected, walkable and vibrant – while still holding onto the village charm that locals love so much.
