New on the Block in Somerset West
There’s always something happening in our village, and the past few weeks have brought a few exciting additions to Somerset West. From a fresh new look for a familiar neighbourhood favourite to a new Korean eatery, a family-run deli and even a new place to work out or get some work done, here’s what’s new on the block.
KwikSpar Lion’s Square
Lion’s Square, Main Road
After more than 25 years of being part of the Somerset West shopping routine, the familiar KwikSpar at Lion’s Square has had a well-deserved makeover. The store is part of a family-owned business that also runs KwikSpar Paul Roos in Stellenbosch. Magda Stapelberg, together with Danie and Christa Strydom, heads up the Somerset West store, while Beate Strydom and Shanel Gildenhuys manage the Stellenbosch branch. We popped in for the grand opening on 8 October, and after months of renovations, we can confirm that the wait has been well worth it!
The launch was a celebration of more than just a refreshed store. Local favourites including Blos Bakery, Babylonstoren, Two in a Bush and Blaauwklippen were there sharing treats, while the real stars of the show were the KwikSpar staff and contractors who helped bring the project to life. They were celebrated with champagne, balloons and a live performance by a group of talented young musicians from Parel Vallei High School.
The Grounds Meat & Deli
47 Caledon Street, Lionviham (Old Michaels Arcade)
If you appreciate a good steak, traditional boerewors or a deli counter filled with delicious things, you’ll want to know about The Grounds Meat & Deli.
The family-owned butchery opened its doors last month, bringing four generations of butchery heritage to Somerset West. Their story began in Bredell, Johannesburg, in 1945, and today the family’s passion for quality and traditional craftsmanship lives on.
Expect quality beef, lamb, pork and chicken, dry-aged steaks, handmade biltong and droëwors, and a gourmet deli counter stocked with handcrafted products and braai favourites. Many of its products are made on-site, using carefully selected ingredients and meat sourced directly from local farmers. Whether you’re planning a weekend braai, stocking up for the week or looking for something special for the dinner table, it’s worth popping in to see what’s on offer.
Minari Korean Kitchen
Oudehuis Centre, Caledon Street
Looking to try something a little different on your next lunch or dinner outing? Minari Korean Kitchen has opened a beautiful new sit-down restaurant in the Oudehuis Centre. You may already know Minari from its Stellenbosch restaurant or its Uber Eats offering, but Somerset West locals can now enjoy the experience right here in the village.
The new restaurant brings Korean flavours to Caledon Street, offering a fresh option for those keen to explore something beyond their usual order. Whether you’re planning a lunch catch-up or an evening meal, it’s another reason to make a stop in the village centre.
Keep an eye on Minari’s menu and weekly specials to see what’s cooking.
Neighbourgood’s Co-working Space at Lourensford
Lourensford Wine Estate
For those who work remotely, run their own business or simply need a change of scenery from the home office, there’s a new workspace worth knowing about. Neighbourgood has introduced ‘De Verge’, a co-working space set within the historic wine cellar at Lourensford Estate. It brings a contemporary working environment into a setting that feels a world away from the traditional office.
The idea is to bring work and lifestyle together in one place. The space offers flexible work areas, private offices and shared amenities, with the surrounding estate providing an inspiring backdrop for the working day. Flexible lease terms and optional furniture packages make it suitable for different working needs, whether you’re looking for a shared desk or a more private setup.
For freelancers, entrepreneurs, small teams and remote workers, De Verge offers another way to connect with people and get work done in Somerset West.
Aspire Fitness
Twin Oaks Centre, Main Road
Aspire Fitness, a proudly South African-owned gym, is expanding from its Stellenbosch club, now in its fourth year, to Twin Oaks Centre on Main Road in Somerset West. The new club will follow the same approach: a clean, well-equipped premium space, personal service, and a community atmosphere rather than a packed commercial gym – open 24/7 to members, 365 days a year!
They are planning to open by 1 December 2026. Flexible memberships with no long-term contracts are available, and Founder Members who join early lock in their rate and can train during the soft-opening period. You can register your interest here.
The move further positions Twin Oaks Centre as a growing wellness hub for the area, and although it is not yet complete, here’s a sneak peek render of the space.
One of the things we love about Somerset West is that there’s always something new to try, while familiar places continue to evolve alongside us. A big thank you to the local businesses who keep raising the bar. You’re part of what makes Somerset West such a special place to live, work, move and play.
