Causes We Care About: The Charities of Somerset West

A thriving community is only as strong as the care it provides to those in need. With the celebration of Human Rights Day this month, we are shining a light on the local heroes of our village – the organisations that work tirelessly to uplift, protect, and empower those who need it most. These charities, championed by Somerset West locals for Somerset West locals, embody the true spirit of community.

For the Children

The Imibala Trust changes lives by supporting school-age children from impoverished backgrounds. Their flagship Sponsor-a-Child program ensures children can access education, while their creative arts initiatives – ballet, pottery, drama, and music – give kids the space to express themselves and dream beyond their circumstances.

Child Welfare South Africa Helderberg has been a cornerstone of child protection since 1956. Covering Macassar, Sir Lowry’s Pass, Firgrove, and Somerset West, they work to prevent abuse, intervene when children are at risk, and reunite families where possible. Their work ensures that vulnerable children receive the safety and care they deserve.

At Heartlands Baby Sanctuary, the belief is simple: every child deserves to belong. This sanctuary provides love, shelter, and healing for orphaned and vulnerable children from birth to six years old. Whether reuniting families, placing children in foster care, or guiding them to adoption, Heartlands creates a foundation for every child to grow into a happy and healthy future.

For the Homeless

What started as a derelict park is now a flourishing space of hope in the heart of our village – the Somerset West Village Garden. This urban farm offers work opportunities for the unemployed and homeless, allowing them to earn tokens for food and essentials. The garden not only nourishes bodies but also restores dignity, offering a “hand up” rather than just a handout.

Since 1988, the Somerset West Night Shelter has provided a safe haven for single adults, and in 2020, they expanded their services to accommodate entire families. They offer much more than a place to sleep – providing job training, counselling, childcare, and social services, ensuring that those who stay with them leave stronger, more self-sufficient, and with hope for a fresh start.

For the Frail and Elderly

The Helderberg Society for the Aged (HSFA) has been caring for the elderly since 1958. Offering everything from independent living to frail care, they provide a safe and nurturing environment for seniors to enjoy their golden years with dignity and support.

Helderberg Hospice is dedicated to compassionate, end-of-life care, ensuring dignity and comfort for those facing life-threatening illnesses. Whether at home or in their specialised support centre, their team provides medical, emotional, and spiritual care, bringing peace to both patients and their families.

For Women

At Choices, the focus is on education and empowerment. By providing women and young people with information on pregnancy and sexuality, they help them make informed choices about their futures. Their Helderberg Baby Saver initiative also offers a safe, life-giving option for mothers unable to care for their newborns, ensuring every baby finds a loving home.

For the Community

In the heart of Sir Lowry’s Pass Village, Paint Sir Lowry’s Pass Village is bringing colour and hope to the streets. What began as a passion project by artist Charlie Vettori has blossomed into a movement – turning blank walls into vibrant murals, fostering community pride, and inspiring the youth to dream beyond their surroundings.

For the Animals

The Animal Welfare Society Helderberg (AWSH) is the guardian of Somerset West’s four-legged residents. Whether rehabilitating abandoned pets, reuniting lost animals with their owners, or providing free veterinary care to pets in underprivileged areas, AWSH ensures that all animals receive the love and medical attention they need.

Get Involved

These organisations remind us that Somerset West is not just a geographical spot on the map, but a community that cares. Whether your passion lies in helping children, supporting the homeless, protecting animals, or empowering women, there is a way for you to make a difference. Let’s choose to take hands, give back, and build a village where everyone can thrive.
