The Best Burgers in Town

Happy International Burger Day! While the origins of the hamburger are still hotly debated – Hamburg or the US? – One thing is certain: Somerset West is serving up some seriously delicious contenders. So, where are you going for the best burger in town? We took to the streets this past week and put our taste buds to work to answer that very question. So here it is: our take on the 5 best burgers in Somerset West.

Around the World in 8 Burgers - Fletcher’s World of Burgers

New York may have a Little Italy, but did you know Somerset West has a Little Jamaica, Spain, and Greece tucked away in Fountain Square on Caledon Street? At Fletcher’s, you can travel the entire globe between two buns. Although they boast many exotic burgers inspired by flavours from around the world, we decided to keep it local with the South African and the Classic Cheese. And oh, was it anything but basic. The classic cheese is everything a burger should be (and more), while the caramelised onion chutney on the South African delivers exactly what the menu promises: “a sweet safari in every bite.” If the classics are this good, we’re definitely going back for the Greek next time.

Half the Size, Double the Fun - Mugg & Bean at Chelsea Village

Can’t decide? No problem. Mugg & Bean’s Mini Duo Burgers let you mix and match: choose two boerewors-and-cheddar minis, two sesame-crusted buttermilk chicken minis – or one of each, like we did. The boerie burger tastes like a braai in a bite, while the chicken delivers that perfect crispy crunch.

Jamming with Flavour - Sanook

Any Pearl Jam fans out there? We’re not talking about the band, we’re talking about Sanook’s legendary burger – but we think there may be just as many fans of the burger as there are of the band in any case… One of their many delicious options, the Pearl Jam leaves your taste buds rocking with flavour – wagyu patty, truffle mayo, bacon jam, and of course, the many, many onion rings.

The Big Boys - The Smokey Brisket

Craving something beyond the usual beef or chicken? Head to The Smokey Brisket for a lineup of slow-smoked pulled pork and brisket burgers – stacked and dripping with flavour. And while this post is all about burgers, their Gatsbys deserve a shoutout too. Don’t miss Tuesday Burger Nights or their weekday lunch specials (12:00 - 17:00) for a great deal on selected burgers.

For the Gherkin Lovers - SCHOON Café

A great winter pick is the cosy Schoon Café on Bright Street. Warm up next to the fire with their mouth-watering Smashed Beef Burger – made with 100% beef, bacon chilli jam, and served on a toasted butter brioche bun. And yes, we said it – the gherkins make it.
